Restriction....

Let's talk Restriction.  That is the title of the little handout I received at the docs office when I went in for a fill on the 4th.  Needless to say I didn't get a fill, because apparently...I had lost 6 lbs...and according to the photo I was pretty tight.

I just think this is a handout that should be given when a bandster comes in for their very first adjustment.  Not when a person is almost a year out.  Ugh.

Here is what it says.

Definition of "Restriction"
The best way to look at "restriction" is eating your food normally, but just less of it; that is, a smaller size portion.  That is all restriction means...a decrease in the size of your meal.  So if you are eating large platefuls of protein and vegetables you obviously need more restriction.

You think...well ummm...that is not what I thought restriction was.  I thought something totally different.  Okay...maybe I'm just a dope...but yeah...I was way off the mark.

Restriction
Your goal is to have the least amount of restriction that enables you to do the rest yourself.  You should only eat until satisfied and no longer hungry.  This is to be differentiated from eating until you are full and stuffed.  There is a difference.  This is a learned behavior in the brain.  So you will have to discipline yourself initially until you have mastered this concept to stop eating when satisfied and no longer hungry.

Do not see how much you can eat, but see how little you can eat.

You need to eat less and you need to eat differently.  This is the real reason weight loss surgery works!!

There is a common misconception among many patients that the more adjustments that they have will result in more restriction and that will translate into the more weight they will lose.  This is absolutely wrong thinking.  The more restriction and tightness you have, the more miserable you will be.

The lap band does not work by making you feel full with less.  It works by making you feel satisfied with less.

Do not get an adjustment if you are not going to make good healthy food choices and exercise as much as possible.  Having restriction, yet cheating on your food choices, defeats the purpose of the Lap Band operation.

The Lap Band should only be doing 60% of the work.  The remaining 40% is your part.

Why don't they give this to you one your first adjustment?  I mean this could make a major difference in someones journey.  At any rate...I thought I would share.  I'm sure many of you already knew this.  I'm tardy to the party...but I'm getting it now.

I knew this about restriction! It is why I have only had two fills in four years. When I eat til satisfied I am fine. I have no issues with PBing either. I am tight! It is when I overeat that all the problems begin.

It is remembering not to take the last bite. I always try to tell myself that the band is there to keep my portions where they need to be. That is it's only goal.

The band will not make me get my ass off the couch, it will not make me stop shoving sweets, pizza, and cakes into my pie hole! That is all on ME! I put all of my initial weight loss back on by eating around my band. I made it OK to eat the things I knew I should not be, even when I was NOT working out!!!

Another reason I measure my food still, and use small plates and bowls and yes even baby spoons. Call me a diehard, but it is what keeps me honest!

Love you sweetie, glad you have realized what restriction should be!

How is your fill going?

Thanks for posting Dawnya.

I had a small fill in August but I really didn't think the "band" was doing it's job. I went back about three weeks ago because I knew I was hungry in between meals and that I shouldn't be if I was making good food choices. I had another small fill and it was the best decision I've made in over a year.

I am now back to losing. Now I know what restriction feels like.

Thanks again.

I'm glad you finally found your answers, so many people think it means physically stopping them from eating things!

It should be a requirement for all band patients to read and understand that handout!! I don't know that I ever completely understood what restriction was all about but by listening to my body and doing what felt right I actually ended up doing what the handout says. I'm happy with only having had one fill...it does the trick enough so I can control my portions. I have never understood people who want to be so tight that they can only eat 4 bites...where's the fun in that?!

I have known this, but have not lived by it. I really need to! I always take it one bite to far, and I need to stop that! Eat to satisfaction, not fullness! Truth be told, I probably need a smige un-fill.

That's the truth. I only got the truth after 14 months so you are well ahead of me. They said I should only eat 1 cup at a time and no more even if I wanted more. Then I was to wait until I was hungry and eat only 1 cup more. I last about 3 hours yet when it is the proper fill, you can go longer. I end up eating 4-5 times a day because I'm hungry. Until they fill me right. I guess they want to keep it a secret or maybe we really didn't hear them because we thought we actually knew this little band rules. Good luck in getting the magical sweet spot. It's really, really good. Better than sex. Well maybe the same.

I found out - apparently the hard way - that I was at good restriction before my last fill. Hence why I had it removed yesterday :)

I think you are right, they should hand that info out at every fill appointment!!!

Great information! I hadn't heard it put like that before!

This is the way I look at restriction, which is why I am amazed by bandsters who always want that 'tight' feeling. Great information!
